Der Mercedes-Benz W116 ist eine Reihe von Luxuslimousinen
die von September 1972 bis 1980 hergestellt wurden und als erste Modelle als S-Klasse bezeichnet wurden. Dies war die erste Mercedes-Limousine mit dem neuen Corporate-Styling-Thema

Nach der Kraftstoffkrise von 1973 wurde das SEL um eine Version des 280 mit langem Radstand erweitert. 1975 wurde der W116 mit einem neuen Kraftstoffeinspritzsystem ausgestattet
um den überarbeiteten Abgasnormen auf den europäischen Märkten zu entsprechen. Eine leichte Leistungsreduzierung war das Ergebnis dieses Updates
1978 wurde durch eine Reihe von Motoraufrüstungen das ursprüngliche Leistungsniveau mit neuen Kraftstoffeinspritzsystemen wiederhergestellt. Ab 1975 verwendeten sie das mechanische Kraftstoffeinspritzsystem K-Jetronic
ein weniger kompliziertes System
das sich auf lange Sicht als viel zuverlässiger erwies
Dieser Mercedes wurde im März 1980 von einem deutschen Professor (Universität Heidelberg) mit 5.571 km auf dem Kilometerzähler nach Neuseeland importiert
